Sharing from someone who is a fan of paper books!

That person is me. If you have followed my blog before, you already know that I am a fan of paper books and do not favor reading books with ebooks. I even wrote an article comparing why you should read paper books

You can see the previous article: If you want to read books effectively, please don't read Ebooks!

Things would continue like that if it weren't for the reason: My bookshelf ran out of space, I had to put a whole stack of books on the shelf. After I finished reading the book The Japanese Minimalist Lifestyle, I decided to buy a Kindle book reader to make everything lighter and tidier.

Kindle series

Kindle will have several main product lines as follows:

  • Kindle Basic

If the product only says Kindle, it is Kindle Basic. Kindle Basic has a compact design and quite light weight.

If you rarely read books in a low-light environment or if you do, you also read under light like reading paper books, then you can choose a regular Kindle because Kindle usually does not have a backlight. Kindle prices are usually much cheaper than other product lines.

  • Kindle Paper White

Kindle White is the same form factor as Kindle Basic but has an additional backlight. This means you can read in the dark without the need for additional lights.

Kindle Paper White costs more than Kindle Basic.

  • Kindle Voyage

Kindle Voyage is more expensive than KIndle Paper White with a pretty nice design and the screen is considered better than Kindle Paper White.

However, Kindle Voyage has been discontinued and discontinued by Amazon, so you can only buy it as a likenew device

  • Kindle Oasis

Kindle Oasis is the model with the highest price. Oasis will be larger than the other machines with 2 more switch buttons on the side. This margin is also made larger to make it easier to hold and read with one hand.

Should I buy a Kindle Oasis book reader?

Although larger, the weight of Oasis is lighter than other models.

Please refer to some of your feedback in the association below:

After researching, I decided to choose Kindle Paper White 4 gen 10 for the following reasons:

  • There is a backlight so it can be read in low light
  • Lighter than the old lines, holding and reading reduces hand fatigue.
  • Waterproof: Although I rarely let water in.
  • I don't need the Oasis for my needs, and the Oasis is a bit big. I need it to be compact enough to fit in my pocket so I can put it on for convenient carrying.

However, when I bought the 32Gb version, I found it a bit overkill. I should have just needed the 8gb version to save the book and read it comfortably. If you like reading manga or large pdf files, please buy it!

Currently, at the time I update this article, I have just switched to using Oasis 3 (2019) because my old Paper White 4 continues to have touch problems even though this is the device I sent to the US for Amazon to send it to. Return the warranty. The device lasted about 5-6 months and then I found it annoying to read page jumping so I threw it away. I also read less books.

During this social distancing period, I bought Oasis 3 on Tiki and received same-day shipping even though I was in quarantine. I bought the Oasis 3 (2019) in black 8GB. This Oasis 3 version has more backlight and has a yellow light mode to prevent eye strain, quite good for reading at night.

This is the Oasis 3 I bought. If I don't use a leather case, it's very light and comfortable to hold, but it feels a bit fragile and easily broken, so I still have to buy a leather case...

After experiencing Oasis 3 (2019), I feel quite satisfied because it is larger but holds very light and thin, convenient to read with one hand with physical buttons, and does not accidentally touch the screen to turn pages. . In general, upgrading is quite worth the money.

What does Kindle offer?

Should I buy a Kindle book reader?
This is my old Kindle PaperWhite

As you can see in the picture, the Kindle fits quite well in the hand, relatively light, only equivalent to a slightly thick book, but more compact so it doesn't cause much hand fatigue.

The e-ink screen reads quite like a paper book and does not cause eye strain or eye damage no matter how long you read. What I like most is that at night before going to bed, I can lie in bed, turn off the lights, turn sideways and face up and still be able to read books. When I'm bored and sleepy, I just fall asleep without having to worry about turning off the lights, putting away books, etc. Especially useful for those who have the habit of reading before going to bed without affecting the person sleeping next to them.

I don't have to think about what books to bring when I go out to read anymore, just bringing my Kindle is enough, I can read whatever I want. Reading books on personal development and marketing got bored and turned to reading novels for entertainment. You cannot do this if you read paper books, you cannot carry the 1200 page Suoi Nguon with you to read.

The truth is that since I got Kindle, my reading time has increased a lot, because I can read it anywhere, anytime: sitting in a cafe, waiting for the bus, waiting for someone to arrive, before going to bed, ... And carry many books so you get bored reading one genre and then switch to another.

Kindle itself is also very suitable for a minimalist lifestyle because there is no need for too many paper books anymore. Before, I also donated more than a hundred paper books I read to a free library in Hanoi. Now there are only a few important books left in the house that cannot be replaced.

The special thing that makes you spend several million dong just to buy a device that only has reading features, no web surfing, no other features instead of other devices such as mobile phones and tablets is:

  • A book-only reading machine has no other features to help you focus on reading, instead of being distracted by Facebook notifications, emails, games, etc. Surely many times you are reading a book and then go to the other applications and then surfing Facebook, playing games for an hour before realizing I was no longer reading books.
  • The E-ink screen helps you read books extremely comfortably without harming your eyes, helping you experience the feeling of reading a real book, unlike when you read on other devices.
  • Supports many book formats, adjusting the font in small increments is very simple and smooth. (except pdf files)
  • Compact and lightweight, saves space because I bought too many paper books, which now take up too much space and have to be wiped constantly because they collect dust after a while. Very suitable if you want to follow minimalism.
  • You can note down important parts and find them quickly when needed.
  • You just need to click on the parts to see the date (I don't remember exactly what the correct English term is for this)
  • It's even better if you often read books in foreign languages because you just need to copy the dictionary and when reading, you can look up words very quickly and simply. Just hold on the word you want to look up and a pop-up will display the solution. like for that language. And a huge warehouse of books online, on Amazon so you can buy and read immediately.
  • The battery life is terrible, if you read a book for half an hour, the battery life can be up to a month.

What are the disadvantages of Kindle?

In order for the review to be objective, there must be weaknesses. The downside that I see with Kindle is that there are not many Vietnamese copyrighted books. The books sold on Amazon are mostly in English only.

Therefore, reading Vietnamese books on Kindle is mostly non-copyrighted books. Although I really want to buy copyrighted books to support publishers and authors, publishers in Vietnam mostly only sell ebooks for use on their phone apps.

Reading books on phone apps is already a bad experience, but each publisher has its own app with no connection to each other. Even if I want to buy it, I can't buy it.

Copyright problems occur in any paid intellectual product. I hope that Vietnamese publishers can link up to create ebook sales pages or ebook stores on Amazon, for example, so that everyone can Buy and download to Kindle to read.

Because even paper books are now widely sold and printed illegally, if you don't provide ebooks, there will be people re-typing them. So it's better to do it in a professional and regulated way so that people can easily buy and report non-copyright sharing sites than the current situation.

Where to buy a Kindle book reader?

I was completely satisfied when I bought the Kindle Paperwhite, although after that I had a bit of a bad experience because I spent a lot of time and effort to warranty the device because after using it for a while the touch screen malfunctioned, but that's okay. The reason is only me. Thanks to that, I also know the great support from Amazon even though I bought it portable, not directly from Amazon.

Currently, Amazon does not allow Kindle to be shipped directly to Vietnam, so they are all hand-carried goods.

You should choose reputable shops to buy to ensure future benefits. You can buy on Tiki, I think the price is good, and you will feel more secure.

Don't be like me when I bought it and didn't know and wanted cheap prices so I chose a small shop to buy. You Please avoid maydocsachkindle.com come out. This side's customer support attitude is very bad.

When my computer started automatically turning pages, I had just bought it less than a month ago and didn't know how to use it much, so I thought maybe I had turned on the automatic page turning feature by mistake and that's why it happened.

I sent a message to that party with the purpose of knowing the reason for support. But when texting livechat on the website, support logged into the chat and saw that so they didn't reply. After that, I sent a message on the fanpage and saw it but did not reply.

Where should I buy a Kindle?

When I asked if the machine was faulty and didn't respond, it took a while before they started answering and asked me to take a photo so they could see the warranty card.

I thought they just needed to prove that I had purchased there. Turns out it was asking me to take a photo of the warranty card Do you see the line no warranty for screen defects? (When buying, it is said that the warranty is 1 year but it is misleading to the customer because on the warranty card it will say that the warranty is only for software - what does software need warranty for? Please pay attention when buying. anything electronic)

Ok, no screen warranty, ambiguous warranty policy, I completely understand because those are common things with electronic devices.

What I'm uncomfortable with here is that I "hate the attitude" of this party when supporting customers, when speaking with the meaning Don't read the warranty card? There is also no further support guidance on how much our support costs, where we can repair it, or let us know that we can send it to Amazon for free replacement support.

I was lucky to know this when in a group, a friend posted to show off Amazon's replacement warranty even though he didn't buy a genuine product.

After knowing this, I feel even more upset with this shop. At least I just need an instruction to send it to Amazon for warranty so I can know. At that time, I thought I should throw away the device I just bought for 4 million. Sales don't care at all! Like buy it and you're done. Leave the rest alone!

*Note: If you are experiencing this situation and your device is still under warranty, you can chat with support and send it back to Amazon for warranty. However, Amazon only ships warranty returns to addresses in the US, so you need to find a shipping unit with a warehouse address there to send it back.

Instructions for using the Kindle book reader

Some experiences when using Kindle:

  • Absolutely do not use charging sources with high electrical current such as fast charger (2A charger), iPad charger, tablet charger, etc. The cause of my device's touch sensor problem is because I accidentally plugged in the fast charger a few times. Samsung. You can just use a regular charger, or plug it in via a computer USB port.
  • You should buy a case for the device to avoid damage to the screen.
  • Recommended book formats are PRC, MOBI, AZW. PDF books will not be as enjoyable to read as the above formats. Only use them if the book is a specialized book that uses a lot of images. (If you mainly read books in this format, you should use an iPad, Kindle is really not suitable)
  • If you read Vietnamese books, you can join Kindle groups. They often have book-sharing libraries. You only need to contribute from 100k to support maintenance fees. Find a book you need to read and download it. Don't download the combo of 10,000 ebooks, 1000 ebooks like I did before. Copying it to your computer makes it very difficult to find books, many of which I don't read.
  • You can manage books, convert, change cover images, and information using software Caliber – Free but very convenient to use.

Until now, I still have no regrets about my decision to buy Kindle. I read more books than before because I can read them anytime, morning or night, and it's convenient to carry. If you are wondering see Should I buy it? Kindle book reader If not, then make your decision with confidence!
